Wow. A dope track from Kendrick Lamar. What else is new?
“Cloud 10″ is apparently the official song for the new Windows Phone, and man did that company go up in my book for using K-Dot as their choice of artist. This track is produced by Nosaj Thing, and the beat is crazy. Kendrick goes in as usual, and this song is particularly exciting to me because it has more of a “mainstream” sound than we’re used to hearing from Kendrick, yet he still makes it work masterfully. Some underground hip-hop artists (cough, Wiz) start to lose their originality and appeal as they begin to make the transition to the radio – not that Kendrick’s even close to that point yet, but he’s starting to gain a bit of well-deserved recognition – and it’s nice to see his rhymes are no less sharp than ever.
I’ve said this like a million times, but if you haven’t heard Section.80 yet, you’re sleeping on the best rap mixtape/album of the year. The best.
Check out the Rap Genius lyrics for “Cloud 10,” and then take a look at the video below if you’ve got two minutes to spare. It’s all about the making of “Cloud 10,” but the video gives some great insight into Kendrick’s mind and personality. I’ve become fascinated with him as a person, and I think before it’s said and done he’s going to be labeled as a visionary and quite possibly the greatest hip-hop artist of our generation.
