Odd Future Boston Concert Preview + Five Songs to Get Familiar With OF

There is absolutely nothing like an Odd Future concert. I promise you, there is nothing.

I saw OF for the first time back in May when they made their first-ever stop in Boston as part of their six city North American tour. I thought I knew what to expect, but as soon as Syd came on stage and started doing her deejay thing, I quickly realized how wrong I was.

I’m gonna make a long story short and just say that all the ridiculous, crazy, absurd concert videos you see when you scour YouTube to see what the Golf Wang Hooligans have been up to… they do not do the ridiculousness, the craziness, and the absurdity of the live shows ANY justice. Not to sound cliche, but an Odd Future show is simply something you need to experience firsthand to understand.

Odd Future doesn’t have openers. They do shit their own way, and back in May when I saw them at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, that meant letting fans stand and wait for an hour and a half after the doors open before Syd came onstage. Then after a 20 minute deejay set, the rest of the gang (sans Frank, unfortunately) stampeded on stage and commenced 45 minutes of pure chaos that included more stagediving than most people will witness in a lifetime, some all-time classic performances, and all in all a great, albeit exhausting, show, and a perfect outlet to let out all the end of the school year stress on the night before my last final exam.

It’s a little less than six months later, and tonight I will be doing it all over again. Tyler and the crew are hitting Boston for the second time this evening, this time at The Royale with the doors opening at 6 pm. I’ll be heading down there in a matter of a few hours along with my good friends Jason and Gohn as soon as they drive up from CT, and I couldn’t be more pumped. I’m no less excited than I was in the hours before I saw them for the first time six months ago, the only difference is I have a little better idea of what to expect. Or maybe I don’t. After seeing this video of their NY show from two days ago, it’s pretty clear that you really can’t predict what’s gonna go down at an OF show.

Anyway, I can’t wait. I’m praying Frank Ocean is there because that would just add another incredible element to the show, but he’s only been showing up to a handful of concerts so I’m not getting my hopes up. I didn’t get much sleep last night cuz I was cramming for an exam, but I have no doubt as soon as I walk in the Royale tonight I’m gonna get an instant surge of energy that’s gonna carry me through the night. This week was one of the more stressful ones this year in terms of how much shit I had to do for class, so naturally I’m very much looking forward to chanting “Kill people, burn shit, fuck school!” this evening.

Though nothing this afternoon will likely live up to the thrill getting to meet Tyler provided back in May, I am excited to give the winner of my Odd Future Ticket Giveaway Contest before the show. Any OF fan knows that this show sold out in 15 seconds, and only the most hardcore of followers are typically willing to pay the average resell price of upwards of $70 to catch them live. I ended up with an extra ticket because one of my friends I bought a ticket for ended up not being able to go, so instead of selling it I decided to do a giveaway contest through this site. I wanted to give someone who either missed out on a ticket or has never seen OF live the opportunity to be a part of history for free, and after talking to the winner I’m glad I was able to provide that opportunity. I’ll be meeting up with him at some point before the show today, so even though I’m not meeting Tyler again, that should add a cool element to the whole experience.

I don’t have much more time to write, but I want to wrap this up by posting the five Odd Future (Tyler, Frank, Earl (Free Earl), Domo, Mellowhype, etc.) songs that I would want to see performed at my dream OF show (NOTE: It would be very easy for me to pick a top five full of entirely Earl or entirely Frank…but I’ll mix it up). These are pretty much the songs that if someone asks me to show them some of the best Odd Future songs, I would introduce them to.

So enjoy the following tracks, and stay tuned throughout the weekend as I’ll be putting up some videos and a concert review.

  1. i’m going to be at the concert at the house of blues this march and i’m dragging a friend who only know “yonkers” with me. she wants to brush up on the songs beforehand but i honestly can’t even predict which ones they’d perform because the one thing i can count on them being is unpredictable.

that being said, since you’ve been to two of their shows before would you mind passing along the songs that you remember them performing that way i can at least give her a few to listen to? thanks!

    • this time around i assume they’ll do a lot of new material since the new album is coming out the day before the show, but the previous two times they did everything from Sandwitches to Orange Juice to Bitch Suck Dick and a ton more. Domo did a few tracks off his own mixtape, there were a few Mellowhype tracks performed, it was really a good mix.

      • ahh this is just getting me more excited for the concert! thanks :) i figure as long as she knows a few songs she wont look like a total dork lol
