Last month, I wrote a little bit about why GoldLink‘s debut project, The God Complex, was one I was looking forward to more than any other. The 20-year-old Virginia native is an unmistakably exceptional talent. He’s a gifted lyricist with a story to tell, and over the course of the past few months, he’s carved a lane for himself with a sound all his own, one he appropriately labels “future bounce.”
It’s a futuristic style that blends an elastic flow with upbeat, bouncy production – much of which has come from the Soulection family – and it makes for a remarkably enjoyable listening experience. GoldLink’s music is the type can be digested passively in any environment, but simultaneously the type that possesses depth and revealing layers for listeners to dissect if they so choose. The God Complex, premiered by The FADER moments ago, is truly just another step on the road to greatness. It’s an essential one, though, and an outstanding debut effort. Prior to today, GoldLink had released just a handful of freebies on Soundcloud and one visual for the title track a month ago, but his talent and trajectory were crystal clear. The God Complex is a big step and proves that GoldLink’s early success wasn’t just a flash in the pan. He’s here to stay, and the nine-track collection powered by production from Louie Lastic, Fingalick, Lakim and more is as much a sign of where things are headed in the future as it is a treat to be indulged in the present.
